LEXINGTON REPUBLICAN TOWN COMMITTEE

There will be no LRTC meeting in December.  HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Why We Are Republicans

Some may say there is little difference today between Republicans and Democrats.  I beg to differ.

Those of us who are Republicans are Republicans for a reason.  We see differences of substance that define us and that set us apart from those of other parties.  If I may, let me take the opportunity of the holiday season to explain why I am a Republican.

Republicans generally have a great respect for tradition, for the wisdom and experience of our ancestors.  There are some who say the newer and more exciting an idea, the more effective it will probably be.  And there are those who say since our traditions and our political, legal and economic systems have not given us a perfect society, we should consider throwing them over for something new, or at least entertain the idea of substantial changes to these systems.  Those who think like this are generally not Republicans.  During his 1996 presidential campaign Robert Dole famously offered to serve as a ‘bridge to the past.’  As Republicans, we know we must carry along the best of the past to make the future secure and prosperous, and use the wisdom and experience of yesterday to avoid making the same mistakes tomorrow.

Among the traditions Republicans hold sacred is a commitment to our nation’s security, and respect for the servicemen and women who have safeguarded it.  We greatly value the service and sacrifice of those who were willing to lay down their lives for our benefit.  We know that there is no freedom, no prosperity, no safety and security, no happiness left to pursue without the soldier who guarantees these things with his life.  Our Lexington Republican Town Committee is honored with the membership of many veterans, and we are reminded of their service at our committee meetings held each month in the hall of Lexington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3007.

In this holiday season, there are many worthwhile traditions to recognize.  Regardless of our religious views, I hope each of us enjoys this season as a season of peace, of giving and of brotherly love.  Sometimes others treat us in ways we don’t appreciate and which may not engender a friendly response, but more often than not when we offer a friendly smile and a kind word, others respond in kind.  I believe most religious traditions and even non-religious traditions of ethics and morality will be well served by friendship, forgiveness and understanding towards others.

Happy Holidays, and thank you very much!
